Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Southern Power Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) shut down construction of its biomass power plant project in Sacul, Texas, after a bomb threat message scribbled inside a portable toilet was discovered. Construction of the $421 million plant was halted while the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Department investigated the threat.
The 117-megawatt, biomass-fired plant has been under construction since October 2009. It was scheduled to be mechanically complete by year's end and to go into operation during the second quarter of 2012. Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) and Zachry Engineering (Minneapolis, Minnesota), which are the contractors building the plant, decided to shut down construction during the Thanksgiving holiday. Construction is expected to resume today.
American Renewables LLC (Boston, Massachusetts) was the original developer of the Nacogdoches Power LLC renewable power plant. In October 2009, the company sold the project to Southern Company.
When completed, the project will be one of the largest biomass-fueled power plants in the U.S.
Southern Company and its divisions have more than $22 billion in capital and maintenance spending planned through the fourth quarter of 2013. Projects are located in Alabama ($166 million), Florida ($174 million), Georgia ($18.2 billion), Mississippi ($3.4 billion) and North Carolina ($700 million).
