Brazil Inaugurates First LNG Terminal at Port of Pecem

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On August 20, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and other authorities inaugurated the 7 million-cubic-meter-per-day Pecem liquefied natural gas (LNG) receiving and regasification terminal in northeastern Brazil. The facility is operated by Transpetro, a Petrobras (NYSE:PBR) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) subsidiary, at the Port of Pecem. The LNG from the terminal will be used mainly to supply thermoelectric plants, such as Termoceara and Termofortalez in Ceara state and Jesus Soares Pereira in Rio Grande do Norte state.

The Pecem terminal began construction in December 2007 and was completed in August 2008. The facility features state-of-the-art technology that will allow for it to use vessels that can store LNG, regasify products on board and transfer LNG from one vessel to a regasifier through cryogenic arms. The terminal is expected to begin operation in late September 2008 after the last connection to the pier is completed.

As part of the project, Dock 2 at the Port of Pecem, which used to operate as a petroleum derivates terminal, was modified to be able to receive LNG. Two new concrete platforms were constructed; the dolphins, platforms used for mooring ships, were reinforced and the LNG transference system was installed. A 22.5-kilometer natural gas pipeline was constructed and will connect the terminal to the existing natural gas pipeline network.

The Pecem Terminal and a second regasification terminal is being built by Petrobras in Baia de Guanabara in Rio de Janeiro to help Brazil achieve its goal of not depending on imported gas from neighboring countries.
