British Columbia Explodes with $29 Billion Industrial Project Activity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Industrial project activity, especially for projects in the early project planning stage, is on the rise for the Canadian province of British Columbia. Energy and extractive industries dominate the province’s 159 future projects totaling more than $29 billion.

British Columbia is a major transportation corridor for both Alaskan oil and gas and Alberta oil sands products. The Oil & Gas Transmission Industry has projects representing 42% of future spending in British Columbia, from 22 projects. Projects involve multi-billion dollar pipeline infrastructure projects to move Alaskan and Alberta oil and gas to export market hubs.

British Columbia has a wealth of natural resources, such as minable reserves of copper, gold and coal, and with the recent upswing in metals and energy prices is leading to increased exploration and development activity to extract these resources. Right now, there are 26 Metals & Minerals Industry projects totaling more than $5.3 billion under development. One example of the type of project underway in British Columbia is the new Wolverine coal mine, located near Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. Western Canadian Coal Corporation (Vancouver, British Columbia) recently started operations at the site following a $145 million expenditure on the grassroot metallurgical coal mine. Coal from the mine site is transported by rail to a port terminal on the pacific coast, and from there shipped overseas to the Asian market.

There are also a large number of power generation projects in the province. The Power Industry is the second largest industry for future capital spending with 45 projects totaling more than $7 billion. Power Industry projects include major new hydroelectric, wind, coal and biomass fired projects.
