Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan) has picked Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) to construct the 350-megawatt Swift Current combined-cycle power project in Saskatchewan. The project, which is owned by SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan), awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the dual-fuel project after an extensive process that began in 2012. Burns & McDonnell will be responsible for hiring sub-contractors.
The project is intended to address growing demand for electricity in Saskatchewan, which has seen steady growth. Construction is expected to start this fall and will last about three years.
The site for the facility was chosen due to its close proximity to existing transmission infrastructure and natural gas supply. Combined-cycle facilities have a proven technology, with a track record of a short lead time and relatively low costs compared with other kinds of facilities. The efficient combined-cycle facilities also emit less greenhouse gases. The project has a total investment value of more than $400 million and is expected to create over 500 construction-related jobs during the construction phase. The operational facility will have more than 20 full-time positions.
