Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SaskPower (Regina, Saskatchewan) and Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) recently broke ground on a natural gas-fueled generating station in the Rural Municipality of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. After a long, stringent environmental review process, the project was approved last year for construction.
The 352-megawatt (MW) facility will feature a one-on-one combined-cycle power plant, and will utilize a Siemens combustion and steam turbine, equipped with a CMI heat-recovery steam generator. The project will address the growing demand for power in Saskatchewan; support the integration of intermittent renewable generation (particularly wind and solar); and provide replacement power for the retirement of nearby conventional, coal-fired generating units.
Burns & McDonnell will act as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor, and will hire several specialty subcontractors during the construction phase.
The project is expected to take a little more than two years to complete and will create more than 500 construction-related jobs at its peak. The new facility will also bring 20 permanent, full-time jobs to the local community. When complete, the facility will be able to power a city the size of Saskatoon.
SaskPower will act as the construction management entity and the City of Swift Current will own and operate the facility. The project has a total investment value (TIV) of $400 million and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2019.
