Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--California continues to be golden for the Food & Beverage Industry. Despite a high tax rate, which has caused some companies to flee the state for better incentives and cheaper labor, California still prevails, showcasing 175 active projects with a cumulative value of $2.3 billion. These projects vary in size, industry sector and timing, with capital investments that range from $500,000 to $400 million in various stages of construction.
California is a leading state in raw-milk production and tomato processing. It is the largest producer of almonds worldwide, and it leads the way in the production of fruits, nuts and vegetables, with more than 76,000 farms throughout the state.
Industrial Info is tracking 131 California-based projects in the Food & Beverage Industry with a construction start date of December or later, with a total investment value (TIV) of $1.74 billion. Thirty-one projects already are in the construction phase with a TIV of $465 million.
Sixteen California projects with a TIV of $203.9 million are scheduled for completion in 2016, including a grassroot cold storage facility and brewery renovation. By the end of 2017, another 107 projects worth $712 million are slated to wrap up the construction phase, and while project delays are likely, figures for 2018 forecast an additional 41 projects starting and completing construction that are valued at $1.3 billion.
Some of the major contributors to California's growth are Anheuser Busch Inbev S.A. NV (NYSE:ADR), Del Monte Foods Company (NYSE:DLM), Dole Food Company (NYSE:DOLE), and PepsiCo Incorporated (NYSE:PEP).
Grassroot construction accounts for $1.4 billion of the overall anticipated projects for the state, which is about 60% of the total capital investment.
One of the largest projects in the state is a plan by California Dairies Incorporated (Visalia, California) to build a $400 million grassroot evaporated milk-processing plant that will kick off in the third quarter of 2018. A few more examples of new facilities in the state include:
- $280 million grassroot milk-processing plant
- $50 million meat-processing plant expansion
- $40 million greenhouse expansion
- $30 million craft brewery renovation
- $25 million walnut plant expansion
