Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Callaway Nuclear Generating Station in Fulton, Missouri, went off line Friday, July 26, due to a small fire in the turbine building. Sources at the facility, owned and operated by AmerenUE (NYSE:AEE) (Saint Louis, Missouri), said that the event occurred late Friday night and that the safety systems were effectively put in place. They said that there was no threat to the community or plant personnel.

Plant officials said that they have their own fire brigade on site and that they were able to maintain the situation quickly and effectively without incident.

According to the report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the fire occurred in the turbine building near the main generator. It appears at this time to be electrical in nature and is under investigation by the NRC and plant officials.

There is not a definitive date as to when the unit will be returned to full capacity. Plant sources said that electrical insulation, BUS and ductwork will need to be repaired, and that they will need to do a thorough investigation to determine any other repairs that may be needed.

Plant officials are hoping to wrap up their investigation within the next couple of days and are hoping to have any repairs made and the unit operating again by Tuesday of next week.

Sources stated that the units return date is pending based on the outcome of the investigation by the NRC and plant officials, as well as any other damage that needs to be repaired.
