CEL Opens Bids for Detailed Design of Cimarron Hydroelectric Project in El Salvador

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--El Salvador's Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) (San Salvador) recently launched a bidding for the development of the detailed design of the 261-megawatt El Cimarron Hydroelectric Power Plant, which will be built at the highest point of the Lempa River. The plant will increase the electric power generated during the dry season at hydroelectric plants located downstream.

The project, with an estimated cost of around $500 million, includes the construction of a dam and the use of a 15.3-square-kilometer reservoir. The plant would be equipped with four Francis turbines that would supply 687 gigawatt-hours per year of electricity to El Salvador's national grid through a 230-kilovolt, 35-kilometer transmission line.

CEL authorities announced that bidding rules will be available through December with offers to be opened on February 16, 2009. Construction is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2010. CEL is also receiving proposals to validate the studies to expand the 5 de Noviembre Hydroelectric Plant and hopes to select an engineering, procurement and construction firm in 2009.
