Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 46-megawatt (MW) Totoral Windfarm, which began construction in December of last year in region IV of Chile, recently completed construction and is expected to start generating electricity in the coming weeks.

SN Power owns 80% of the special-purpose entity Norvind S.A., created to develop the project. The remaining 20% is controlled by Chile's Centinela.

The windfarm will use 23 wind turbines manufactured by Vestas (CPH:VWS) (Randers, Denmark) and will dispatch electricity to Chile's central grid. Each turbine is expected to produce 2 MW, giving the facility a total capacity of 47 MW.

Project authorities said the windfarm will start operations ahead of schedule, and hope that this experience serves future undertakings in Chile and in other countries where SN operates.

The facility also will help reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by 65,000 tons per year.

According to the National Wind Energy Commission, Chile's windfarms will produce 200 MW of energy by 2010, and plans are submitted for windfarms to generate another 1,300 MW. The 200 MW that Chile's windfarms will produce in 2010 will be enough to cover the energy demands of 900,000 residents.

The largest of the planned windfarms, the Talinay windfarm, will use 243 turbines and generate a total of 500 MW of electricity by 2013.
