China Huadian's Lingwu Ultra-Supercritical Air-cooling Project to Begin Operations in December 2010

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction on Phase II of China Huadian Corporation's (Beijing) 2,000-megawatt (MW), ultra-supercritical air-cooling project in Lingwu recently entered its final stage. According to the latest report, the first unit of the project is expected to begin operations in December 2010.

Lingwu is a county-level city under the jurisdiction of the city of Yinchuan, in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. The power plant is developed and operated by Huadian Ningxia Lingwu Power Generation Company Limited (Yinchuan, Ningxia), a joint venture of Huadian International Power Company Limited (65%) and Ningxia Power Generation Group Company Limited (35%) that was established in March 2006. The project is also a large-scale pithead power-source project planned in the Ningdong Energy and Chemical Industry Base in Ningxia, with a total planned capacity of 5,200 MW, including two 600-MW units in Phase I and two 1,000-MW units each in Phase II and Phase III. Construction on Phase I began in August 2005, and the first two units of Phase I were commissioned in June and September 2007. Construction of Phase II received approval and began in 2008. Phase III is under pre-stage preparation, and is expected to begin construction in 2011.

As the first 1,000-MW, air-cooled project with independent intellectual rights in China, the designated coal consumption is as low as 282 grams per kilowatt-hour. Compared with conventional wet-cooled units, the project could save about 400,000 metric tons of standard coal and up to 70% in water consumption. Construction of the project will have an important meaning for the construction of coal-fired power base, which will transmit power east in Ningxia, as well as in ensuring the sustainable development of the power industry in coal-enriched areas that are high in poverty.
