Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--During an official visit to China, Tanzanian Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda signed seven agreements covering Chinese development investments in Tanzania's fields for electrical power, renewable energy research and the construction of business and research centers.
The projects, worth $1.7 billion, include the expansion of the Tanzanian national grid route from the capital Dare Salaam to northeastern regions of the country. The $692 million contract was signed between Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) and Tebian Electric Apparatus Stock Company (SSE:6000089) (Changji, China).
Shanghai Electric Power (HKSX:SEHK2727) (Shanghai) was contracted to construct the 240-megawatt (MW), gas-fired Kinyerezi 111 power plant, and China Gezhouba Group Corporation (SSE:600068) (CGGC) (Wuhan) signed for the development of the 525-MW Rumakali hydropower project in the Southern Highlands regions. The project is to be built in three stages. Feasibility studies are being conducted on the two projects, with the final cost still to be established.
The local Mkonge Energy Systems Limited entered into an agreement with Sino Hydro Resources (SSE:601669) (Beijing) for the development of the 118-MW Masigira Fall hydropower project, with an investment of $136 million.
The National Housing Corporation signed a $500 million agreement with China Railway Jianchang Engineering (CRJE) (Dar es Salaam) for backing the construction of residential houses and business centers around the country. Another $200 million agreement was signed by Poly Technologies (Beijing) for technological and financial support for house construction in Dar es Salaam.
The creation of a renewable energy research center will be the result of a $136 million agreement among The National Development Corporation (NDC), China Dalian Economic & Technical Corporation Group (Dalian) and Hydro China Kunming Engineering Corporation (SSE:650051) (Kunming).
