China to Accelerate Hydropower Development in Tibet

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In order to achieve objectives in energy conservation and emissions reduction, China is planning to accelerate hydropower development in Tibet. So far, four of the top five national power producers have entered the Tibet market.

Following the official kickoff of construction on the 510-megawatt (MW) Zangmu Hydropower Station on the Yaluzangbu River in November 2010, China Huaneng Group (Beijing) is preparing the 165-MW Guoduo Hydropower Station, the second cascade scheme of the four projects planned in Zhaqu. Pre-feasibility studies for the project are expected to receive approval in the first half of this year. Except Guoduo, China Huaneng has also kicked off pre-feasibility studies for the Gushui, Rumei and Cege 3 cascade projects planned on the Lancangjiang River.

By the end of 2015, the Zangmu, Laohuzui, Guoduo and Duobu hydropower stations will be put into operation, according to Li Wenhan, the vice director of the Water Resources Department of the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

China Huadian Corporation (Beijing) is conducting pre-feasibility studies for the Yebatan, Lawa and Suwalong portions of the six cascade projects planned on the upstream Jinsha River. The three projects have been listed in the nation's 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15). According to the planning, China Huadian will invest more than $18 billion for hydropower development in Tibet in the next 10 years, trying to have an installed hydropower capacity of more than 10 gigawatts in Tibet by 2020.

China Datang Corporation (Beijing) is working hard on the Nujiang River. The Planning and Environmental Impact Report for Hydropower Development in the Tibetan Section of Nujiang River is expected to be completed this year.

In May 2010, China Guodian Corporation (Beijing) established its branch in Lhasa to develop a series of hydropower projects with a total planned capacity of about 18.9 GW in Tibet.

Tibet has a total exploitable hydropower capacity of more than 140 GW, accounting for 24.6% of the total in China. However, as of the end of 2007, the operational capacity of hydropower in Tibet was only about 600 MW.
