Clariant Fast Tracks Expansion Plans for North Carolina Specialty Chemicals Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Clariant Corporation (Mount Holly, North Carolina), the North American affiliate and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Clariant International, Limited (Multenz, Switzerland), is expanding the capacity at its Mount Holly, North Carolina plant, which produces the pesticide DEET, polyester polyols and surface-active agents. Originally reported by Industrial Info in April 2005, the expansion is expected to be complete by the summer of 2007.

Day & Zimmerman, Incorporated (Greenville, South Carolina) was hired to provide the engineering and construction services for this expansion project. The expansion began with the relocation of a 45,000-lb/hr boiler from another Clariant plant site. Relocation of the boiler and construction activities for the estimated $16 million expansion of the plant began in the fourth quarter of 2006. Along with the boiler relocation, there will be an installation of new process equipment including reactors and related processes to increase the plant’s capacity of specialty chemicals.

Clariant plans to award the remaining electrical and mechanical subcontracts in January 2007. The equipment installation and associated electrical, instrumentation and piping work in the production areas of the plant is expected to kick off next month.

Elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region, Clariant is also expanding capacity of its Martin, South Carolina plant. The expansion will again include the installation of new process equipment and related processes, along with control system upgrades designed to increase the capacity and efficiency of the plant. The control system upgrade will be plant-wide and will convert the current PLC control system to Modicon PLC controls. The upgrade will cost an estimated $5 million and is expected to begin late in the first quarter of 2007.
