Colombia's Amaime Hydropower Station to Begin Operations Next Month

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 20-megawatt (MW) Amaime hydropower station, which is currently under construction in Palmira city, in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia, is expected to be brought online in September. Construction of the $50 million project started in early 2009.

The project, located 11 kilometers north of Palmira on the Amaime River, will be equipped with two 10-MW Andritz Hydro SA (Vevey, Switzerland) Francis turbines. A 4.6-kilometer tunnel with a 160-meter fall was constructed as part of the project.

According to the project schedule, tunnel and electrical equipment testing will be performed at the end of August, and officials told Industrial Info that the facility would be inaugurated on September 15.

The owner and operating company, Empresa de Energia del Pacifico S.A. ESP (EPSA) (Cali-Yumbo, Colombia), is developing two other hydropower plants in the Cauca Valley: the 20-MW Alto Tulua and the 20-MW Bajo Tulua, both of which are on the Tulua River.

EPSA represents about 8% of the electricity produced in Colombia and is a vertically integrated power company whose majority indirect shareholder is the Spanish company Gas Natural SDG S.A.
