Comanche Peak Nuclear Developing Expansion Plans for 3,400-Megawatt Phase I Expansion of Texas Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Luminant Energy Company LLC, a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings Corporation (Dallas, Texas) (88%), has formed the Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Company LLC (Dallas) with Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems (Washington, D.C.), a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (Minato, Tokyo) (12%), to design, engineer and construct the 3,400-megawatt (MW) first-phase expansion of the Comanche Peak Nuclear Generating Station near Glen Rose in Somervell County, Texas.

The station, which currently has a generating capacity of 2,300 MW, is equipped with 1,150-MW Westinghouse pressurized water reactors with Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine/generators. Construction commenced in 1974, and Comanche Peak 01 came online in April 1990, and Comanche Peak 02 came online in April 2003.

Plans call for two additional units -- Comanche Peak 03 and Comanche Peak 04 -- that will utilize two advanced pressurized water reactors provided by Mitsubishi Nuclear Energy Systems, as well as two 1,700-MW Mitsubishi Heavy Industries steam turbine/generators. Luminant and Mitsubishi have not finalized construction costs but estimate that it could range from $2.5 million to $6 million per megawatt, or $8.5 billion and $20.4 billion in total. The current goal is to have the units online by 2020.

Luminant is looking at possibly adding four other units in Texas that may or may not be installed at the Comanche Peak plant. If all six units are built, the station would be the largest nuclear power station in the Americas.
