Design Under Way for $25 Million Port Expansion in California

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Port of Los Angeles (San Pedro, California) is currently in the design stage for a phase II $25 million port expansion at its Terminal Island Berths 97-109.

Construction consists of a 924-foot wharf northward addition to Berth 102 and a 376-foot southward addition to Berth 100, as well as a new rock dike. The expansion will also include placing 560 concrete piles at Berth 102 and 215 concrete piles at Berth 100. A prime construction contractor will be selected in June/July 2009 with construction anticipated to begin by the fall of this year. Overall completion is slated for the fall of 2011.

PBSJ (Orange, California) was selected to provide engineering services for the expansion.

The Port of Los Angeles was founded in 1907 by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners. The port covers approximately 7,500 acres and includes 270 berths, 71 container cranes, 43 miles of waterfront and 27 cargo terminals, including dry and liquid bulk, container, break-bulk, automobile and Omni facilities. The terminals handle roughly 190 million metric tons of cargo annually. The port is considered to be Southern California's gateway to international commerce.
