Environmental impact studies are under way for construction of a 9.3-mile light rail line running from downtown Detroit to the Michigan State Fairgrounds, which is near Eight Mile Road. The line will include approximately 13 to 15 stations. A construction management firm is expected to be selected in May of this year. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall, with overall completion set for 2013. The new line, which was first proposed in March 2008, is expected to create more than 12,000 jobs in Detroit. The Woodward light rail transit is expected to reduce carbon monoxide emissions by nearly 4,180 tons annually.

URS Corporation (Grand Rapids, Michigan) and Parsons Brinkerhoff (Detroit) were selected as consultants to provide prime and draft environmental impact studies for the line.

The DDOT was founded in 1922 and is considered the public transit operator in Detroit. With approximately 44 routes and a fleet of 472, the DDOT ridership was estimated in 2007-08 to be about 140,000.
