Duke IGCC Leads Way for Indiana Industrial Construction Explosion in 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indiana leads the nation in new industrial project construction starts. Currently, there are ten major industrial projects totaling more than $4.7 billion that have just gotten under way with civil site preparation activity and are gearing up for full fledged construction in 2009. For example, Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) is nearing completion of civil site preparation activity and is gearing up for mechanical construction kickoff for a 630-megawatt integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) unit addition at the Edwardsport Generating Station in Edwardsport, Indiana. The $2.35 billion project is being engineered and constructed by Bechtel Group Incorporated (Houston, Texas). Commissioning is expected to begin during the second half of 2011. Industrial Info has been tracking this project since the early planning stages in 2001. The cost of the project has more than doubled since 2004.

Sensient Technologies Corporation (NYSE:SXT) (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) recently began construction on a two-year program to upgrade and expand its flavor-extract manufacturing plant in Indianapolis, Indiana. TQ Constructors (Dayton, Kentucky) is providing engineering and construction services and Mattcon General Contractors Incorporated (Indianapolis, Indiana) is the general contractor for the building modifications. The $20 million project will involve the construction of new compounding and powder rooms as well as expansion of the packaging and cooler areas.

In addition to the $4.7 billion in recently started construction projects, there are an additional 50 projects totaling $4.4 billion in the advanced construction stages, including the $40 million rolling mill expansion at Steel Dynamics Incorporated in Pittsboro, Indiana. Construction on this project began in March 2008 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Also, the state has a healthy amount of projects on the books with scheduled construction starts in 2009. Currently, there are 163 industrial projects totaling $4.4 billion scheduled to begin construction during 2009 in Indiana. The majority of these projects are energy-related projects in the Power and Alternative Fuels Industries. Nonetheless, this can be nothing but good news for a state that has been as impacted by the economic downturn as any in the nation.
