Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Ningde, China, located at the west bank of the Taiwan Straits is emerging as a key energy hub for eastern China, according to Chen Xingsheng, Vice Mayor of Ningde City, on a news conference held by the Government of Fujian Province on May 27, 2008.
According to the news conference, the total installed capacity of power generation projects in operation and under construction has surpassed 10,000 megawatts (MW), and there are also several million kilowatts of thermal power and 2,000 MW of hydropower under development in the city at present. Scores of energy investors are exploring the potential in the surrounding area of Sandu'ao, the center point of the Chinese coastal line, which has access to 78-kilometers of deep water coastal line. Nearly 100 deep water berths from 10~500 thousand-tonnage could be built in the area, and it is an ideal place for the construction of a large transfer harbor as well as large industrial projects.
Presently, Phase I of Datang Ningde Thermal Power Plant, a power plant with a total planned capacity of 4,400 MW owned by China Datang Corporation (Beijing) has put into operation. Phase II, a 1,200 MW project, is scheduled to begin operation by the end of this year, and Phase III, a 2,000 MW project, is expected to start in the near future.
On February 18, 2008, the $11.4 billion Ningde Nuclear Power Project, the largest energy project in Fujian with a total planned capacity of 6,000 MW received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and its #1 & #2 units is expected to begin operation in 2012 and 2013 respectively. The project is jointly invested by Guangdong Nuclear Power Investment Company Limited, a subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) (Shenzhen), Datang International Power Generation Company Limited (Beijing), and Fujian Coal Industry (Group) Company Limited (Fuzhou).
On May 8, CGNPC Energy Investment Company signed an agreement with Fujian Mingdong Electric Power Limited Company (Ningde, Fujian) (000993.SZ) to jointly develop associated pump-storage power station for the nuclear power project in Ningde.
The area surrounding Sandu'ao is also rich in tidal flats, fresh water and hydropower resources with nearly 2,500 MW of exploitable hydropower resources capable for the development of thermal power, hydropower, wind power and tide power. "Currently there are many projects under feasibility study," said Cheng Xingsheng.
Ningde is also listed as a national small hydro base according to the Renewable Energy Development Plan for 2006-2010 issued by the NDRC early this year.
