Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--On April 1, the Ecuadorian utility Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador CELEC EP (Quito, Ecuador) announced the release of bidding documents for the supply and installation of 380 megawatts (MW) of thermoelectric installed capacity to stabilize the power supply during the ebb tide phenomenon that affects the country's main hydropower plants in the summer. The total investment of the project is $400 million.
According to the documents, the facilities will have internal combustion engines or steam turbines. In either case, the primary fuel will be residual fuel oil No. 6, with the possibility of using diesel as startup fuel.
The 380 MW will be distributed among four locations. Three locations are covered by substations owned by state-owned transmission company Transelectric SA (Quito) in the cities of Santo Domingo, Quevedo and Santa Elena. The fourth area is known as Puerto Atún and is in the city of Jamarijó. At each of these locations, a minimum capacity of 30 MW and a maximum capacity that varies from location to location can be installed. Maximum capacities are 130 MW for Santo Domingo, 120 MW for Quevedo, 130 MW for Santa Elena and 100 MW for Jamarijó.
The offers will be accepted until May 3, 2010, and the winning bids will be announced May 17, 2010. The winning companies will have between 120 to 200 days to construct the facilities.
