Eighteen GE Frame 9E Turbines to Make 2,000 Megawatts Cut in Nigeria’s Power Shortfall

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources Incorporated; Houston, Texas). A contract signed between Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power and Steel and GE Energy marks specific progress in the country’s target of adding 10,000 megawatts to the nation’s power supply by 2010. Domestically, Nigeria is a giant dwarf with rich resources and exports of oil and gas and the largest population in Africa twinned with lack of planning stamina, and endemic corruption. The fevered condition of the country’s economy makes the power generation industry a token of vastly unfulfilled potential.

The contract to supply five power projects with a total of eighteen GE Frame 9E gas turbines will add over 2,000 megawatts of power to the country’s supply in the Niger Delta area when commissioned after delivery over the period from June to September in 2006. The turbine sets will be manufactured in GE’s plant in Greenville, South Carolina. In the initial phase of operation, the turbines will operate in simple-cycle mode with conversion to combined-cycle operation planned for the future.

The installation of the turbines will fulfill plans for Calabar, which will have five turbines and a total capacity of over 564 megawatts; Eyaen, near Benin City with four units and a total capacity of over 451 megawatts; Sapele-Delta state with identical capacity to Benin; Egbema in Imo state with three units totaling 338 megawatts capacity and Gbarian/Ubiee in Bayelsa with two units and a total capacity of over 225 megawatts.

GE will supervise the erection of the plants and will also supply generators and transformers. Under a separate contractual service agreement the company will provide spare parts and repair services.

In October 2005, Rockson Engineering (Port Harcourt, Rivers State) was selected to supply four Frame 9E gas turbines for the new 480 MW simplecycle plant at Alaoji, Abia State, which will supply power to the Power Holding Company of Nigeria. These units are being manufactured at GE Energy’s facilities in Belfort, France and will be shipped in the first four months of 2006. The first two machines will be installed in June 2006, and the second two in August 2006.

With the completion of the current order there will have been 90 heavy-duty gas turbines installed in Nigeria. In 2003, it won orders for eight Frame 6B gas turbines for power generation at Train 1 to 5 natural gas liquefaction plants on Bonny Island, Rivers State, which supplies 13% of global LNG requirements. The initial order included a further three Frame 6B’s and seven Frame 7E’s operating in mechanical drive mode. GE also supplied nine of the fifteen compressors in the initial project. Train 6 is scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2007, and could see another four gas turbine and six compressor units installed.

After operating in Nigeria for the past 30 years, GE Energy has opened a new Oil & Gas Service and Training Center at Port Harcourt.
