Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas--Coal has been an incredibly powerful and useful fuel for the generation of electricity. The abundance of this fuel source has led to the development of multiple generating facilities in the United States and throughout the world. Industrial Info is currently tracking 1,625 commissioned coal generating facilities throughout the world. North America has been identified as the largest consumer of coal as a primary fuel, followed by Asia and Europe.
In the United States, laws have been adopted to control the emissions caused by coal-fired generation. Owners of coal-fired facilities are being forced to decide whether to comply and modify existing units or shut down these units once the deadline for modifications has been reached.
The Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) has introduced a pilot emissions-control technology at its James M. Barry Power Station in Alabama using carbon capture and storage technology. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (MHI) (TYO:7011) (Tokyo) provided the technology that allows the flue gas to react with an advanced amine solvent. The captured carbon dioxide is compressed and transported by pipeline to the Citronelle Oil Field, which is approximately 11 miles from the plant, where it is injected 9,500 underground.
The carbon dioxide is not used to recover oil, but is trapped in a geological formation below the surface. This process of carbon capture and sequestration is only one technology being used as an outlet for the consumption of coal. IIR's Environmental Compliance Database provides details on projects that address air pollution control initiatives at power plants throughout North America.
