Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Corpoelec, a newly created firm overseeing 14 electricity companies in Venezuela, recently announced that the 500-megawatt (MW) Termozulia II thermal power plant will begin operation by the end of the year. The $400 million facility, located in Zulia state, will provide electricity to the western region of the country. The plant is owned by Corpoelec's Energia Electrica de Venezuela (Enelven).
The turnkey project comprises the entire development of the combined-cycle unit, which will feature two 162-MW gas turbo generators, two 50-metric-ton-per-hour heat recovery boilers and one 183-MW steam turbo generator. The engineering, procurement and construction contract was awarded to Jantesa S.A. (Caracas, Venezuela).
The plant will begin operation in open-cycle mode in the last quarter of 2008 and switch to combined-cycle mode in the last quarter of 2009, plant officials told Industrial Info.
Enelven also owns and operates the 500-MW Termozulia I power station, which was converted to combined-cycle mode in December 2007. Termozulia II will share the same management board with Termozulia I.
Along with Termozulia II, Corpoelec plans to begin operation of the 450-MW Josefa Camejo plant by year's end in Falcon state, Venezuela.
Corpoelec was created in June 2007 after the country's power sector was nationalized. The entity controls 14 power companies operating in the country: Edelca, Electricidad de Caracas, Enelven, Enelco, Enelbar, Cadafe, Genevapca, Elebol, Eleval, Seneca, Enagen, Caley, Calife and Turboven.
