Europe Launches 2017 with $3.4 Billion Investment in First-Quarter Pharmaceutical-Biotech Construction Starts

Continuing to return a healthy capital expenditure investment profile, Europe's volume of project activity continues to impress.

With the $3.4 billion divided among 151 projects, the average total investment value (TIV) of each of the European projects is a robust $22.5 million. The individual projects range from scheduled maintenance at a contract manufacturing (CMO) active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) plant in Loures, Portugal, to a $300 million grassroot biological manufacturing in Dunboyne, Ireland.

All of this activity is not entirely unexpected. The very nature of the projects is a great representation of the industry's diverse and global pedigree. From contact lenses to biological drug development and production, the majority of the major companies reported on in Europe have a strong North American presence as well.

A sampling from the first-quarter projects includes a $259 million plasma protein therapeutics unit addition in Marburg, Germany. Located at CSL Behring GmbH's (Victoria, Australia) existing plant, the project seeks to double the site's existing production capacity of plasma derived coagulation products. Abcam plc (Cambridge, England) is planning to construct a $20 million grassroot antibodies production plant. Located within the Biomedical Business campus, the company is building a 40,000-square-foot production plant that will include research laboratories. From a regional standpoint, Germany lays claim to the No. 1 spot in terms of project investment, with just more than $1 billion in 1Q17 project starts divided among 38 projects. Next up is the United Kingdom, with 19 projects adding up to $885 million. Switzerland places third, with $488 million and five 1Q17 projects.

With it being only a couple of weeks into the new year, there remains a chance that a percentage of these projects will be delayed or put on hold. Nothing is ever definite until construction begins--and even then, changes happen. Each project will be tracked and updated. Some may be dropped altogether, while new ones are uncovered.
