First Phase of Desalinization Project Begins Construction in Chinese District

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As the key component of the desalinization project at Binhai New District in Tianjin, construction on the first phase of the Tianjin Dagang desalinization project was officially started. The treatment capability of Phase I will be 100,000 tons per day. The treated water will be mainly for industrial use by neighboring industrial projects to alleviate the current water shortage. The 1 million-ton-per-annum ethylene project at China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) Tianjin Company will be the major beneficiary.

As the momentum of development at Tianjin Binhai New District picks up, Sinopec, Sinochem Corporation and China Shenhua Group are setting up large-scale projects in the district. The development of the petrochemical industry and the new modern city has brought on the need for a bigger water supply. It also brings opportunities for water treatment businesses. The desalinization project will be jointly carried out by the Dagang District and Singaporean Hyflux Limited. Hyflux is a large-scale water-treatment company that specializes in the construction of projects including sea water desalinization, tap water and waste-water treatment. The core technology at Hyflux's sea water desalinization project at Dagang will be its dual membrane technology. The plant will utilize Hyflux's advanced proprietary ultra-filtration (UF) Kristal membrane technology for pre-treatment. Reverse osmosis (RO) technology and energy-recycling technology will be applied to the water-desalinization process to ensure energy efficiency and to raise the water-recovery rate.
