Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Florida Power & Light (FPL) recently completed three solar-power projects to replace a 250-megawatt (MW), coal-fired power plant that was officially retired on December 31.
FPL had a long-term power purchase agreement from 1988 with the Cedar Bay coal plant in Jacksonville, but now has bought the plant to shut it down. The utility says the move will save its customers more than $70 million, as well as preventing nearly 1 million tons of carbon emissions annually.
The completion of these large utility-scale solar projects--Babcock Ranch, Citrus and Manatee, each with a capacity of 74.5 MW--also tripled FPL's solar capacity.
The Babcock Ranch Solar Energy Center is on 440 acres in Charlotte County; Citrus Solar Energy Center is built on 841 acres in DeSoto County; and Manatee Solar Energy Center, which has more than 338,000 solar panels over 762 acres--enough to cover 577 football fields--is in Manatee County. The design and construction of the projects were handled by Black & Veatch (Overland Park, Kansas).
FPL is a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida). NextEra Energy also is the parent company of NextEra Energy Resources LLC, which, together with its affiliated entities, is the world's largest generator of renewable energy using wind and solar sources.
