Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A mill owned by Georgia-Pacific LLC (Atlanta, Georgia) (GP) in Pennington, Alabama, is in competition with several of the company's other mills to build a towel and tissue paper machine. GP has announced plans to invest approximately $500 million to build two machines in North America during the next few years.
The investment toward either of the paper machines and its supporting equipment is approximately $250 million. The machines will utilize through-air-dried technology, which requires less energy and allows for the production of tissue paper that is softer and has more fluff.
Once approved, a new machine would be 18 to 24 months from startup.
GP's mill in Zachary, Louisiana, is among several sites being considered for one or possibly two new machines. For more information, view April 9, 2010, article - Georgia-Pacific Considers Louisiana Site for New Tissue Paper Machine.
The Pennington mill, which is often called the Naheola mill, produces about 60,000 cases of finished paper product daily, with the principal products being Quilted Northern and Quilted Northern Ultra bathroom tissue, Brawny paper towels, and paperboard.
Georgia Pacific was purchased by privately held Koch Industries (Witchita, Kansas) in 2005.
