Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--During the second quarter of 2011, Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) (Manamah, Bahrain) will begin expansion efforts on the GPIC Complex in Sitrah, a reclaimed island belonging to the Kingdom of Bahrain, just south of Manamah.
The area covered by Sitrah includes all of Bahrain's petroleum production. GPIC was established in 1979 by the National Oil and Gas Authority (Manama, Bahrain), Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia) and Petrochemical Industries Company (Safat,Kuwait).
GPIC was established as a joint venture to manufacture petrochemicals and fertilizers at the GPIC Complex, which resides on 60 hectacres of Sitrah. All of GPIC's products utilize natural gas as a feedstock, and the complex has a production capacity of more than 1 million metric tons of petrochemicals and fertilizers per year. Next June, GPIC will begin construction of a US$800 million ammonia unit addition that will increase the complex's overall ammonia production capacity by 700,000 metric tons per year to a total of 1.17 million metric tons of ammonia annually. Around the same time, construction of a US$1.2 billion urea unit addition is scheduled to commence. The new addition will increase urea production by 1 million metric tons per year and will bring the overall production capacity of urea to 1.6 million metric tons each year. Construction of both unit additions is scheduled to conclude during the third quarter of 2013.
