Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Four 70-meter-high cooling towers for two 100-megawatt (MW) coal-fired units at Harbin Thermal Power Plant were dismantled on October 29, 2010, following the shutdown of four small, coal-fired units with a total planned capacity of 100 MW in 2007. So far, Harbin Thermal Power Plant has shut down all six of its small coal-fired units ahead of schedule, which will clear the way for the final approval of its 600-MW Phase VI Expansion.
Harbin Thermal Power Plant is the first Chinese-made, high-temperature, high-pressure thermal power plant, built in 1958. Units 5 and 6, which were recently shut down, were built in 1970s and once were the main power units in the Heilongjiang province. The plant is currently owned by Huadian Harbin Thermal Power Company Limited (HHTPC) (Harbin, Heilongjiang), a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation (Beijing).
In responding to the nation's policy on energy conservation and emission reduction, HHTPC replaced units 1 through 4 with two 300-MW combined heat and power units. Following the commissioning of the two units in 2006, HHTPC became the largest heat and electricity supplier in the Heilongjiang province, with a heat supply capacity of 15 million square meters. To meet the increasing demand on heat supply, the company decided to build another 300 MW worth of units (Phase VI), replacing smaller units. On August 21 and September 3, 2010, the 100-MW units 5 and 6 were decommissioned from the grid. So far, the project application report for the Phase VI expansion has been supplied to the National Development and Reform Commission for approval.
According to the arrangement, the construction of the project is expected to begin shortly. Upon completion, the project will replace a total of 204 small boilers scattered in 125 boiler rooms within its supply area.
