Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Honeywell International Incorporated (NYSE:HON) (Morris Township, New Jersey) is planning to move operations from its Springfield, Illinois, plant to an existing plant in Juarez, Mexico. The Springfield plant opened its doors in 1938, producing electronic components, such as controls, lighting systems, battery indicators and meters for the transportation industry.
One production line from the Illinois facility has already moved to Juarez; other production lines will be shut down in phases for the rest of 2010 and completed by 2011. About 120 people were employed at Springfield and 65 at Spring Valley, at the time of the layoffs. Approximately 87 individuals with developmental disabilities will be affected by this shutdown, many of whom will not find work at all. Overall job loss is estimated at 200 individuals.
Plant Manager Mark Hamal said that moving operations to Jurarez will be more cost-efficient, and Honeywell Hobbs will provide job leads, as well as moral support to families who are affected by this shutdown.
