Howe Sound to Begin Biomass Boiler Conversion Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Corporation (Port Mellon, British Columbia) will begin performing pre-construction activities this spring for the conversion of the mill's biomass power boiler in Port Mellon. The $40 million investment will convert the existing hydrograte stoker boiler to a Metso HYBEXTM Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) boiler. Howe Sound anticipates shutting down the boiler to begin equipment installation and startup of the unit in June. Upon completion of the project, Howe Sound will become one of the largest independent producers of wood-fuelled renewable electricity in British Columbia.

The boiler is an original Babcock & Wilcox with design steam rating of 570,000 pounds per hour and 1,300 psi. The unit has four hydrogrates. The scope of the conversion includes modifications of pressure parts, fuel and ash-handling systems installation, complete automation of the boiler island's process automation system, emission monitoring and reporting, instrumentation, and electrification retrofit.

Poyry (Vancouver, British Columbia) provided consulting services for the project.

The Howe Sound project is being funded by the Green Transformation Program, which provides up to $1 billion in energy and environmental projects at kraft pulp mills across Canada.
