Hunt Refining Selects Engineering Firm for $450 Million Refinery Expansion in Alabama

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Hunt Refining Company selected CB&I Howe-Baker International, LLC (Tyler, Texas) to perform a feasibility study for a $450 million expansion in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The study is expected to be complete in late 2006. Hunt plans to select an engineering firm in early 2007 to perform engineering and procurement services for the expansion. In 2008, the company will select a construction firm to perform construction services. The expansion project will double gasoline and diesel fuel production at the 50,000-barrel par day refinery. The project is expected to create approximately 40 jobs to be added to the current 280-employee workforce.

The project includes the construction of a new 35,000-40,000 barrel per day high-pressure hydrocracker, expansion of an existing 17,000-barrel per day coker to 28,000 barrels per day, and the construction of a new 20,000-barrel per day continuous catalytic reformer. The hydrocracker unit will produce ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels (ULSD). The coker expansion will involve the addition of two additional coke drums to the existing two-coke drum unit. The reformer will help produce the additional gasoline. In addition, the refinery’s total capacity is expected to go to 65,000 barrels per day when complete in 2010.

Hunt Refining Company, founded in 1946, is a petroleum refining marketing company. The company markets gasoline, distillate fuels, and home heating oil, and is a supplier of both paving and industrial grade asphalt. The gasoline and distillate fuels are marketed to Western Alabama and Eastern Mississippi. The heating oil is distributed to New Jersey. The asphalt is distributed regionally to the paving and roofing markets.
