Industrial Construction in Los Angeles County Poised to Take Off with Energy and Infrastructure Projects

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). As far as industrial construction is concerned, things have been pretty slow in Los Angeles County lately. Only a handful of new plants are currently under construction in the county, including an $8 million grassroot battery manufacturing plant being built by Battery Systems, Incorporated (Long Beach, California) and a food distribution center being built by Golden State Foods Corporation (Irvine, California) in the City of Industry. The battery plant is scheduled for completion in September 2006.

This could all change if a slew of projects on the drawing board get approved, including light rail and LNG terminal projects worth billions of dollars. Right now, there is close to $9 billion in future spending being planned for 111 industrial projects in Los Angeles County. Of that total, about 60% is for energy-related projects such as LNG and crude oil storage terminals, petroleum refining unit retrofits, power plant upgrades, and new power plants.

Five major hydrocarbon storage projects are being planned for Los Angeles County or just offshore, including LNG, Crude Oil, and natural gas projects. All in all, there are eleven Oil & Gas Terminals Industry projects totaling $1.7 billion.

A number of light rail initiatives could get approved including billion-dollar extensions to the Metro Gold Line and Mid-City/Exposition light rail systems.

Energy will be front and center with new generation unit additions and environmental upgrades. There are 20 planned projects totaling more than $3 billion.

There are also a significant number of projects currently being planned at Los Angeles County petroleum refineries, with 20 projects totaling $418 million on the books.
