Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $3.24 billion in U.S. wind power projects that are planned to kick off in the third quarter of 2017. Wind energy producers are eager to kick off construction on projects this year in order to receive 80% of the 2.3-cents-per-kilowatt-hour production tax credit before it steps down 60% for projects started in 2018. The Southwest region, with $1.23 billion in planned third-quarter wind project starts, leads the country in terms of value, followed by the Midwest region, with $965 million in planned starts.

One of the largest wind projects planned to kick off this quarter is Aksamit Resource Management's (Lincoln, Nebraska) 300-megawatt (MW) Milligan I Windfarm in Saline County, Nebraska. The project will include 150 2-MW Vestas (Aarhus, Denmark) wind turbine-generators. The project is planned to kick off this summer and be completed in the second quarter of 2018. M. A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm on the project, which also will include a 345-kilovolt (kV) substation. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Texas, two planned windfarms contribute $900 million to the state's planned third-quarter power project starts. The $500 million Willow Springs Windfarm is planned to kick off construction in Weinert, Texas, this summer and take about a year to complete. The 250-MW project will include 100 2.5-MW wind turbine-generators plus balance-of-plant equipment. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The 200-MW Canadian Breaks Windfarm is planned to begin construction in Oldham and Deaf Smith counties in Texas this quarter. The project will include 87 Siemens AG 2.3-MW turbine-generators plus balance-of-plant equipment. Macquarie Capital USA Incorporated (Austin, Texas) is the owner of the project, which is planned for completion next summer. A general contractor is expected to be awarded this summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Buffalo, Oklahoma, the $330 million North Buffalo Windfarm contributes to the Southwest region's dominance in third-quarter wind projects. Gestamp Wind North America (Houston, Texas) plans to kick off construction of the 200-MW project this summer for completion by the end of the year. The project will use 108 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) 1.85-MW wind turbine-generators. Wanzek Construction Incorporated (West Fargo, North Dakota) is acting as EPC contractor on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A 112-MW expansion of an existing windfarm in Illinois helps boost the Great Lakes region's spending. Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) Phase III expansion of the Bishop Hill Wind Energy Center near Cambridge, Illinois, has a total investment value of $265.6 million. The expansion will add 70 1.6-MW GE turbine-generators to the windfarm. The project is planned to kick off this summer and be completed in the second quarter of next year.
