Industry without Borders: $84 billion Pharmaceutical-Biotech Capital/MRO Investment Leaps around the Globe

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--If there has ever been an industry that is global, if not universal to its core, it would be the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry. Accompanying the human clamor calling for cures and treatments for illness or infirmity is the escalation of capital investments for new facility builds and expansions around the world.
A recent survey of reported Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects revealed $84 billion being invested into over 1,900 active projects across the globe. This is activity that illustrates the impact of an industry that reaches far beyond North American shores.
Germany, Ireland, Switzerland and the U.K. are well-established major industry hubs that continue to attract new project spending. Indeed, all across Western Europe, companies are investing both manufacturing and research facility dollars at a steady pace. Significant manufacturing complexes are being built from the ground up, or expanded upon throughout the region.
With the U.S. as the clear industry leader, it may come as a surprise to some that many major pharmaceutical-biotech companies are headquartered outside of the country. The dollars flow from Western Europe to North America and elsewhere as well. The "no-borders" characteristic of the industry is highlighted when comparing the location of corporate headquarters to actual project sites.
Beyond the major mature markets of North America and Western Europe, one would be remiss not to consider the industry's emerging markets, most often referring to Brazil, Russia, India, China, Mexico and Turkey but can also be extended to Southeast Asian and African regions as well, each with its own dual offering of challenges and opportunities.
While growth has been a bit slower to evolve than once projected, these countries still offer the potential of double-digit growth. As health care programs are introduced to millions of citizens, backed by eager governments, both supply and demand will rise. Whether it is the health and well-being of their populations or the lure of big pharma dollars that is the cause for that eagerness is another question, but the result is the same: growth of an industry that can consider every human being on the planet a potential customer.
