Inland Infrastructure Hub, the Port of Catoosa Attracting Energy and Manufacturing Plants

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Travel up the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River navigation system, about 420 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River, and you will find, at just about the center of the United States, the Port of Catoosa. Just northeast of Tulsa, Oklahoma, sits one of the largest, most inland river-ports in the United States and the 2,000-acre industrial area is growing larger every year. The port is currently home to quite a diversification of industry with some 50 companies operating from the area ranging from agriculture products, metal fabricators, barge and tug operators, liquid bulk terminals, to chemical and allied products, as well as other port-related services.

Some of the existing tenants include ConAgra, Peavey Company, Linde BOC Gases, Matrix Services, Bayou Steel, MacSteel USA, Koch, Valero, Westway Trading, Air Products, Praxair and Syntroleum.

Syntroleum, one of the newest players in the port, constructed a demonstration gas-to-liquids plant in 2003. The plant was designed and constructed under the Department of Energy's Ultra-Clean Fuels program, a federal program to develop a new generation of ultra-clean transportation fuels to reduce tailpipe emissions from cars, trucks and other heavy vehicles.

Currently under construction at the port is DeBruce Grain. The company is building and will operate a new $6 million waterfront terminal where it will store and handle dry fertilizer, grain, and grain products and is scheduled to be operational later this summer.

Hawk Corporation is also building a new 240,000 square-foot brake and clutch manufacturing plant at the port that is nearing completion.

The latest news from the port is the announcement of TexCom’s intention to build a new 35 million-gallon per year biodiesel plant on the waterfront. Construction is expected to begin on this plant within the next couple of months.

The port also has a number of existing buildings currently available for purchase and has 250 acres of waterfront access property for a new terminal or a 50-acre rail-served plant site and 1,200 acres of general industrial area, so look to see more industry locating at the port in the future. It may be hard to pass up on such a centralized location in the U.S. with such great port, rail and highway access.

The Tulsa Port of Catoosa, situated at the head of Navigation, on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, is one of the country’s largest ice-free ports and intermodal transportation centers. The Port’s 2,000-acre business complex offers industrial sites for lease or sale. Many of the companies are located at the Port because of the transportation options and savings that waterway shipping can bring.

The 445-mile waterway links Oklahoma and the surrounding five-state area with ports on the Missouri, Ohio, Illinois and Mississippi river systems. Foreign and other domestic ports are accessible by way of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast Intracoastal Waterway.
