Released Monday, August 13, 2001
Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Inc.; Houston, Texas) Interstate Bakeries Corporation (NSYE: IBC) (Kansas City, Mo) will permanently close their Detroit, Michigan bakery on September 23, 2001. IBC's decision to close the plant was mainly due to economic conditions. Built in 1929, the bakery produces Hostess cakes, pies and donuts. The plant's production lines have become inefficient and costly to replace and space has become limited. Most of the Detroit facility's production will be transferred to other bakeries in the Midwest. The closing will affect 233 union affiliated employees to whom the company plans to offer preferential consideration for positions at their other 62 bakeries.
Interstate Bakeries Corporation also known as Interstate Brands Corporation is the largest baker and distributor of fresh bakery products in the US, with over 34,000 employees. The Company produces, markets, distributes and sells a wide range of breads, rolls, snack cakes, donuts, sweet goods and related products. Brand names include: Wonder, Hostess and Home Pride, as well as regional brand names, such as Butternut, Dolly Madison, Drake's and Merita.
