Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Johnson Controls Power Solutions (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), a subsidiary of Johnson Controls Incorporated (NYSE:JCI) (Milwaukee), is planning to construct a $100 million recycling center in Florence, South Carolina.

Plans are to construct an approximately 200,000-square-foot building and parking lot on 36 acres of a 270-acre site located on Paper Mill Road. The facility will allow the company to provide closed-loop, automotive-battery recycling operations. The remaining acreage will remain undeveloped. The company is currently awaiting final permits and approvals for the new plant. An engineering firm will be selected this fall, and a general contractor will be selected by the spring of next year. Construction is anticipated to begin in March 2010, with overall completion slated for the spring of 2011. Approximately 250 new jobs will be created.

Johnson Controls Power Solutions is considered to be one of the largest automotive battery makers in the United States. The company is a Tier One supplier to automotive OEMs, including Ford, Honda and Toyota. The company provides the juice for automobiles and also makes the batteries for generators, tractors, pleasure boats, emergency vehicles and RVs. Johnson Controls Power Solutions also provides hybrid battery systems and is involved in closed-loop, automotive battery recycling. As of 2007, the company consisted of 4,000 employees and had revenues of $400 million.
