Kuwait National Petroleum Company Plans Major Turnaround for Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Kuwait National Petroleum Company (Kuwait City, Kuwait) has planned a 40-day maintenance and inspection turnaround for its 415,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Mina Al- Ahmadi Refinery.

According to sources, the turnaround is scheduled to commence in April 2013 and will cover the Refinery Modernization area of the refinery. The turnaround will include tray replacement, exchanger cleaning, heater tubes, columns, overhead condensers, cyclone maintenance, reactor maintenance, filter changeover and heater pigging.

The overall cost of the turnaround will be approximately $60 million. The major units that will be shut down in the Refinery Modernization area are Crude Distillation Unit 2, kerosene desulfurization units, the atmospheric residue desulfurization units 3 and 4, and the gasoil desulfurization unit.

Other units included in the turnaround activities are the hydrogen recovery unit, hydrogen production units 1 and 2, sulfur recovery units 1 and 2, and the sour water stripping unit.

The Mina Al-Ahamdi Refinery is Kuwait's largest refinery. The Mina Al-Ahmadi Refinery Modernization Project, which was completed in 1984, was intended to provide the local and world markets with low-sulfur petroleum products.

KNPC is implementing the Clean Fuel Project at the Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Al Abdulla refineries, with a view to creating a tightly integrated refining complex with a total capacity of 800,000 barrels per day.

The project was implemented to supply environmentally friendlier petroleum products to local and international markets.
