Liberty Renewable Fuels Plans Construction Start on Michigan Ethanol Plant Early in the New Year

Farmer cooperative-owned Liberty Renewable Fuels, LLC (Owosso, Michigan) is planning to start pre-construction activities on a new fuel ethanol plant that will be located on a 350-acre site near Ithaca, Michigan. Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 110 million-gallon per year ethanol plant that will process over 42 million bushels per year of locally grown corn into 110 million gallons of the renewable fuel annually.

The plant will utilize ICM’s (Colwich, Kansas) licensed ethanol process technology and Wilcox Associates (Cadillac, Michigan) was awarded the general construction contract for the $160 million project. Plans are to start moving dirt and preparing for tank and equipment footings to be poured and construction is expected to be in full swing by April and May of 2007. Barring any delays in long-lead equipment procurement and delivery and raw material availability such as stainless steel, the project is scheduled to be completed and ready for commissioning by August of 2008.

Liberty will also be the fourth fuel ethanol plant currently under construction when the project moves forward. Other plants in Michigan that are underway include Great Lakes Ethanol’s 50 million-gallon per year plant near Riga; The Andersons’ 45 million-gallon per year plant in Albion and Marysville Ethanol’s 50 million-gallon per year plant in Marysville.
