Madison Gas & Electric Starts Commercial Operations in Wisconsin

Madison Gas & Electric Incorporated (MGE) (NASDAQ:MGEE) (Madison, Wisconsin) has started operation of the 150-megawatt (MW) West Campus Cogeneration in Madison. West Campus Cogeneration started operating on May 4, 2005, and is a combined-cycle power plant consisting of two 50MW GE LM 6000-combustion turbines and one 68MW GE steam turbine.

Also located at this station is a 2MW Caterpillar internal combustion engine generator, giving the plant a total capacity of 170MW, with a nominal capacity of 150MW. This power station was built to supply chilled water air-conditioning and steam heat to the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Washington Group International Incorporated (Boise, Idaho) was awarded the engineering for the project. MGE Construction (Madison, Wisconsin), a subsidiary of MGE Incorporated, handled the construction for the project. The total investment to build this project was about $195 million.
