Major Refurbishment and New Unit Installations Under Way at Saskatchewan's Queen Elizabeth Power Station

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A 63-megawatt (MW) English Electric steam turbine unit is getting a major overhaul at the Queen Elizabeth Power Station in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The outage started in February and is scheduled to last until July of this year. The work includes the replacement of the lower pressure blade section, along with valves, pumps, bearings and other associated equipment.

The 371-MW natural-gas-fired facility became operational in 1959, with two 63-MW steam turbines. In 1971, a 95-MW unit was added, and six 25-MW combustion turbines/heat steam recovery generators were added in 2002.

Another three 25-MW Hitachi H-25 simple-cycle, peak-load combustion turbines are being constructed by the general contractor, Graham Construction (Saskatoon) and are scheduled to be operational by the end of this year.
