Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (Mangalore, India) has awarded a project management contract to Engineers India Limited (New Delhi, India) to oversee construction of a $456 million plant expansion in Mangalore, India. The expansion will include construction of a 40,000 barrel per day delayed coker, 32,000 barrel per day fluid catalytic cracker unit, expansion of crude unit capacity from 174,000 barrel per day to 270,000 barrel per day, a 20,000 barrel per diesel hydrotreater, a 105 ton per day sulfur recovery unit, and a hydrogen unit. The company plans to begin site preparation September 2007 and begin mechanical and electrical construction April 2008. The overall expansion is scheduled to be complete by late 2009.

Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) was acquired by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) March 2003. MRPL began production in 1988 with a total crude capacity of 3 million tons per year (54,000 barrels per day) and now currently process 9.69 million tons per year (174,000 barrels per day). The refinery was conceived to maximize middle distillates and have the capability to process (24 to 46 API) light to heavy and sour to sweet crude’s. The refinery is the only in India to have two hydrocrackers producing premium diesel (High Cetane). In addition, it is the only Refinery in India to have two continuous catalytic reformers producing Unleaded Petrol of High Octane.
