McCay Tool Begins Construction of New Missouri Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). McCay Tool & Engineering Company (Fenton, Missouri), a privately-owned manufacturer of aircraft parts and ground support systems equipment, is about to begin construction on a new $2.4 million, 50,600 square foot manufacturing facility with office space in the Greenpark Commerce Center in South Saint Louis County.

The expansion is due primarily to the increase in military aircraft parts orders from its larger customers, Boeing (NYSE:BA) (Chicago, Illinois) and Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) (Bethesda, Maryland). Chris Schneider, McCay's general manager, ascribes the increase in business to a general growth in the defense industry and increased government spending since September 11, 2001 attacks. Schneider said that large defense and aerospace contractors are also outsourcing more work to smaller companies, which, in turn, is requiring those suppliers to upgrade and modernize their plants or risk losing business.

The expansion, of which 43,600 square feet will be manufacturing area, signifies a tripling of the size of McCay's present Fenton plant, and also allows space for an anticipated future expansion.

McCay parts are used in numerous military aircraft, including Boeing's F-18 Hornet and F-15 Eagle jet fighters, as well as the C-17 Globemaster III transport, and Lockheed Martin's F-22 Raptor jet fighter and F-35 Joint Strike fighter. The company specializes in using computer numeric control (CNC) to machine, turn, and assemble aircraft structural components and landing gear parts and systems.

David W. Dial Architects of Chesterfield, Missouri, was chosen to do the architectural work on the new facility, and Kadean Construction Company of Fenton, Missouri, was awarded the general contracting contract. A spokesman for Kadean said they are waiting for permits to begin construction, which should be by the end of March, and that they're anticipating an early November construction completion. All subcontracts have been awarded. McCay intends to hire 25 new employees with the expansion.

McCay Tool & Engineering Company was founded by Stanley McCay in 1950 in Saint Louis, Missouri, as a defense contractor for the U.S. Government. Nicholas Schneider, father of General Manager Chris Schneider, bought the company in 1970 and moved headquarters and production from Saint Louis to Fenton, where the company was awarded a contract to produce parts for Patriot missile warheads, which were being manufactured at the time by Raytheon (NYSE:RTN) (Waltham, Massachusetts).
