Michigan State University Begins Construction of 38-Megawatt Power Plant Expansion Project

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Michigan State University, located in East Lansing, Michigan, has started site preparation for a $15 million 38-megawatt expansion project at the TB Simon Powerhouse located on the university campus. Groundbreaking for the combined-cycle expansion project started last week. Full construction kick-off is scheduled for December 2004, with commercial operation anticipated to begin in Fall 2005.

The project will consist of adding a 14-megawatt natural gas-fired Solar Titan 130 combustion turbine generator, a heat recovery steam generator, and a 24-megawatt Dresser Rand condensing steam turbine generator that will operate in a combined-cycle configuration. The TB Simon Powerhouse currently utilizes two 1960's vintage, 12.5-Megawatt coal-fired generators, utilizing DeLaval Industries condensing extraction steam turbines and two coal-fired units, utilizing GE Power Systems turbines (one 15-MW back pressure installed in 1974 and one 21-MW condensing extraction installed in 1993). The powerhouse currently generates a total of 61-megawatts of power for the university.

Cummins & Barnard Incorporated headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is providing engineering services for the project. The Christman Company based in Lansing, Michigan, is the general contractor and will subcontract out the turbine installation work scheduled to begin in Spring 2005.
