Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Montville Power LLC, a subsidiary of energy giant NRG Energy (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey), is altering its energy production at the Montville Power Station in Connecticut. The company recently submitted a proposal to the state of Connecticut that addressed the state's need for renewable energy.
The proposal involved the station's fuel conversion to biomass. Unit 5, which operates on fuel oil, would be converted to a wood-burning, biomass-generating facility. The unit would produce 42 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.
Another part of the proposal was the addition of a 2.3-MW solar unit. The solar panels would be photovoltaic and cover approximately 10 acres. The solar unit addition is not scheduled for construction until early 2015.
The last part of the proposal is a 5.6-MW, natural gas fuel-cell cogeneration facility. This facility will begin construction in 2015 and will be staggered in construction from the other projects. When all phases are completed and operational, the Montville Energy Park will produce 50 MW of renewable energy. This mixture of multiple renewable energy projects at one facility has given NRG a diverse portfolio.
