NBTY Proves that it Loves New York after All with $18 Million Manufacturing Expansion

The construction plans of nutritionals giant NBTY Incorporated (Bohemia, New York) have proven to be as confusing as choosing which daily vitamin to choose!

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The construction plans of nutritionals giant NBTY Incorporated (NYSE:NTY ) (Bohemia, New York) have proven to be as confusing as choosing which daily vitamin to choose! In 2002, amidst great fanfare, Governor George E. Pataki announced that NBTY would invest $14.5 million and create 150 new jobs with the construction of a new 140,000 square foot distribution facility on Long Island. As reported by Industrialinfo.com, the company would build the project near its soft gel-cap manufacturing plant in Bayport, which is located within the township of Islip, New York.

The Bilow Group (Ridgefield Park, New Jersey) was brought on board to design the building and construction was expected to kick-off in early 2003. In a situation filled with irony, the company that does its best to keep America healthy was then notified in February of 2003 that the town of Islip had determined that the proposed site plans"...may have a significant adverse impact on the environment and a Draft Environmental Impact Statement must be prepared..." The company had further phases planned for the 67-acre site, including an additional 200,000 square foot distribution facility and 350,000 square feet of light industrial and office space.

NBTY suddenly became mum on the project, yet, for the better part of 2003 and well into 2004, it was still considered a viable project. Plans for the distribution center were finally scrapped earlier this year for a variety of reasons that company officials were not willing to either divulge or confirm.

In a stealth move worthy of a special ops team, NBTY instead decided to begin construction to expand their $50 million soft gel-cap manufacturing plant. The plant was built in 1998 and operates under the name of CapsuleWorks, which in itself is fairly unique in the NBTY family in that it did not come about as an acquisition but was designed and built from scratch. NBTY tapped Bilow once again for the $18 million project's design, which should be complete in early 2005.
