Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction of the Salman Industrial City, named for the Crown Prince of Bahrain, began early this year in Al Hidd, Bahrain.
The new multi-billion dollar city will include several key areas, such as the Bahrain International Investment Park, Bahrain Investment Wharf and the Hidd Industrial Zone, and is adjacent to the Khalifa Bin Salman Port on the Persian Gulf. Heavy and light industries will account for some 16% of Salman's gross domestic product once plants and manufacturing facilities are commissioned.
Bahrain has seen an economic growth of 6% per year for the past five years, and despite a favorable future outcome, the government has developed the Economic Vision 2030 (EV2030) plan. EV2030 seeks to improve the state of Bahrain through three objectives: develop the quality of professionalism for employable persons, encourage innovation and ingenuity, and explore growth opportunities. Salman Industrial City falls firmly within the development scheme of EV2030 and will not only provide a hub for industry and economic soundness, but will also generate at least 3,400 jobs for the region.
In 2008, Saleh and Abdulaziz Abahsain Company (Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia) and Chongqing Polycomp International (CPIC) (Chongqing, China) signed a memorandum of understanding to form a joint venture company that will concentrate on the production of fiberglass. CPIC holds a 70% stake in the venture, while Saleh and Abdulaziz Abahsain holds a 30% stake. The company will direct sales of fiberglass toward the construction boom that has enveloped the Middle East over the past decade. Fiberglass, besides being used as thermal and electrical insulation agents for buildings and homes, is used to form fiber-reinforced polymer.
Construction of the $200 million fiberglass manufacturing facility is scheduled to commence next April. The 45,000-square-meter facility will initially produce 140,000 tons per year of fiberglass, however the JVC plans expand the facility's production capacity to 210,000 tons per annum soon after preliminary completion at the end of 2012.
