New Refinery Planned for Utah Will Boost Region's Crude Oil Refining Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Uintah Resources Incorporated (Park City, Utah) is planning to construct a grassroot 90,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) crude oil refinery in the Uintah Basin near the city of Vernal, Utah. Uintah Resources has selected International Alliance Group (IAG) (Houston, Texas) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm. The company is currently moving forward with the front-end engineering and design work for the project. IAG has begun purchasing some of the major equipment and preparing cost estimates for the new refinery, which could cost up to $700 million. Construction for the new refinery is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2013.

The major units of the refinery will include a 90,000-BBL/d crude unit, a 30,000-BBL/d fluid catalytic cracking unit (FCCU) and a Merox unit. Both the FCCU and the Merox unit will utilize UOP technology. Offsite utilities will be a significant portion of the project, as the area where the refinery will be built is undeveloped and has no utilities. Uintah plans to provide its own power supply to operate the refinery.

There are more than 150 crude oil petroleum refineries in the United States. More than 20 of these are in the Rocky Mountains region and have an estimated capacity of 750,000 BBL/d. Utah is home to five refineries with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 178,000 BBL/d. Undoubtedly, the new refinery will have a huge impact on the region. The 90,000-BBL/d refinery will increase Utah's production capacity more than 50%.
