Nova Scotia Power Awards Multiple Contracts for Capital Work at Trenton Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, TX)--As the New Year starts, officials continue the engineering and planning of four capital projects at the Trenton thermal generating station (Trenton, Nova Scotia). The projects consist of low NOx burner replacements on both units, as well as a particulate upgrade and generator replacement on Unit 5. The projects are scheduled to kick off over the next 12 to 18 months with an estimated cost of $50 million.

The Trenton station is one of four power stations in Nova Scotia that uses coal as the primary fuel source with fuel oil used as a secondary fuel. The station houses two operational units, Unit 5 (150 megawatts (MW)), which became operational in 1969, and Unit 6 (160 MW), which started operations in 1991. Both units are scheduled for outages that will incorporate upgrading the low NOx burner systems. Unit 6 will go offline in fall 2008, and Unit 5 will go offline in spring 2009. The contract for this project has been awarded to Advance Combustion Systems Incorporated (Bellingham, Washington).

Unit 5 is also scheduled to undergo a generator replacement during its spring 2009 outage. Nova Scotia Power (Halifax, Nova Scotia) awarded the contract to Mitsubishi Power System (Orlando, Florida) to handle the generator replacement. The largest and most costly project that was awarded at the Trenton plant was the construction of an electrostatic precipitator to be installed on Unit 5. This contract was awarded to Dusttex System (Atlanta, Georgia), which will begin construction in spring 2009. It is expected to go into operation in February 2010.
